T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 810 unboxing and video tour

Hey, look at that! The Nokia Lumia 810 exclusively for T-Mobile showed up on our doorstep and we decided to film us opening her up.

Now although Mobile Nations guru Phil Nickinson played with a dummy Lumia 810, yours truly has not had a chance to even touch one—so this will be my first “hands on” with T-Mobile’s new device. Off the cuff?The screen, even at 4.3” and 800x480 is really bold, bright and eye popping, due in part to some ClearBlack and an OLED display. It also blends seamlessly with that soft-touch black body, which feels quite nice to hold...

The device feels quite light compared to its heavier brother, the Lumia 920 and is in many ways similar in size. If you’re wondering about quality, it still has Nokia’s signature level of craftsmanship but it is certainly a step below the 920’s curved polycarbonate shell, make no mistake. Oh and that camera? Surprisingly it does have an auto-focus assist lamp, which is a nice touch but the lack of PureView for low-light shots is quite obvious.

The device does hum along nicely with a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and although it took about 5 minutes to install all the software, you do get Nokia’s full stable of apps (City Lens, Maps, Music, Transit and Drive) all installed in one shot. In addition, T-Mobile has their exclusive apps including 411 & More, Bonus Apps catalog, CallerTunes (music while people wait for you to answer), Slacker Radio and Zynga Games. That later one brings you to the Windows Phone where you get the ad-free versions of Draw Something and Words with Friends for $0 (savings of $6), which is a great sell actually for you young folks.

Look, we’re not going to beat around the bush:  this is no Lumia 920, so don’t get your hopes up. But this is a Nokia Windows Phone and for what it is, it’s kind of nifty. If we had to call one feature out on the phone it’d be the display: it’s super intense and will keep your eyeballs happy. Just look at those photos...it's really that powerful!

Coming Soon to the Men’s Room: Games You Play With Your Pee

Finally, after decades spent wandering through the world of print, television, and the web, advertising has come home to its spiritual birthplace – the public restroom. Sure, there have been ad campaigns in the loo before, but Sharpie-scrawled messages on walls and band stickers on mirrors don’t count. What startup Captive Media has created takes the whole notion of making a splash to a different level. Higher or lower? It remains to be seen.

What the London-based company has built is a digital advertising display meets game console we’re calling the urinal entertainment system. Think of it as a Xbox, but with more urine and no game controllers. That’s right, it’s pee-controlled gaming, and the company just raised $700,000 from U.K. investors to keep its business flowing. (Sorry for that).

The urinal entertainment system, or UES if you will, is mounted at eye level right above the urinal and uses an LCD screen that merrily loops videos and advertisements until you walk up to the porcelain. Once you pause in front of the fixture long enough to unzip, it’s game on. Instead of using your hands on a touchscreen to play and pee at the same time (think of how difficult and unsanitary that would be), infrared sensors mounted below the screen shoot down into the urinal to detect the direction of your stream and feed that data back into the system to control the game. When your stream interferes with one of the infrared beams, the sensors can tell in which direction you’re peeing. There are even decals inside the urinal to help you aim (something that can’t be bad to have in even non-gaming visits to the bathroom).

There are five games that pop up at random on the UES, including On the Piste, where you speed down a ski run trying to hit penguins; Clever Dick, a trivia game which uses the direction of your stream to pick an answer, and Artsplash, a coloring game which I can only imagine is akin to drawing in the snow. The Captive Media website claims that the games make restrooms cleaner because “men are more accurate when they concentrate.” But if you’re concentrating on a screen while trying to improve your score, it seems just as likely you’ll wind up ruining your shoes.

Co-founder Gordon MacSween says the response has been “beyond his wildest expectations.” During the first night of live testing in 2011 in a Cambridge, U.K., cocktail bar, the UES was such a hit with a group of American servicemen that they spent much of the night in the bathroom trying to beat each other’s high scores, and coaxing others in the bar to head to the restroom to try it. That can’t have been weird at all.

Launched about a year ago at a London club, Captive Media has installed its urinal entertainment systems in 18 bars, hotels, corporate offices, and even a few private residences across the U.K., France, Spain, and Italy. The company’s next mark to hit is American bathroom users, who, while perhaps not in the same league as British pub goers by urine volume, still have to go on a regular basis. Expect the British bathroom invasion next year.

As you might imagine by the sophomoric tone to the whole idea, the games are a hit with guys. But according to MacSween, restaurant and bar owners are just as keen on the idea and are using the UES to advertise drink specials and other promotions on the screens. Cambridge bar Ta Bouche advertised a special on a house-created shot, and the bar reaped a 22 percent boost in sales of the cocktail, the owner says. But not every venue is in it for the advertising, some just want a gimmick to get customers to come back. “Lainston House (a five-star U.K. wedding venue) have the system purely for the customer experience, and because they know people will remember their visit and talk about it,” says MacSween.

And if you’re thinking guys get to have all the fun, Captive Media hasn’t forgotten about the ladies. But instead of toilet games (which would be incredibly awkward to play), there’s just wall-mounted screens to keep gals entertained while waiting in line. Though, considering how well guys have taken to Captive Media’s urinal games, it seems like lines are going to be a bigger issue for the men’s rooms from now on.

Apple’s iPad mini versus Google’s Nexus 7

The closest competitor to the iPad mini is obviously Google’s Nexus 7 tablet. Some may even argue that Apple felt compelled to push out the mini due to the success that Google’s diminutive tablet offering has experienced.

Although it’s been a while since I’ve dusted off my Nexus 7, there’s simply no denying that it’s a solid offering in many areas. I sung the device’s praises, and even Sebastien, who has been a bit more critical of the device, had some nice things to say about it.

Whatever the case may be, it’s pretty obvious that Apple has drawn a line in the sand with the iPad mini, and it too, is quite the compelling offering. How do the two compare? We thought you’d never ask. Check out our head-to-head comparison video inside…

As much as I truly appreciate what Google has done with the Nexus 7 as far as price and features go, there’s simply no denying that the iPad mini beats out its nearest competitor in nearly all facets of the game. Then again, you are paying a premium price for the iPad mini, so you’re getting what you paid for.

You’ve heard the story before, but let me reiterate it one more time for you. The iPad mini’s build quality is leaps and bounds above that of the Google and Asus collaboration. I won’t go as far as to label the Nexus 7 as a toy, because it’s a very nice tablet in its own right. However, once you’ve put in some hands on time with Apple’s tablet, it becomes readily apparent that it’s on a whole new level of polish and sophistication.

As good as the build quality is for the iPad mini, that’s not even the best thing about it. The software is what really makes the iPad mini shine, and it shines brightly. Every iPad customized app already available on the App Store works flawlessly with the mini. That means that at launch, the mini already runs circles around a device that has been out for quite some time now.

It may not seem fair to compare the iconic App Store to the relatively new Google Play, but Google has been at this long enough to help its developers get their act together. The best phone apps are on the App Store. The best tablet apps are on the App Store. Therefore Apple has a huge advantage by default.

I’ve always thought of the Nexus 7 as a decent tablet, but with the release of the mini it seems more and more like an oversized phone. It’s littered with apps that just aren’t customized for the extra real estate, and that, frankly, is a shame.

Yes, the iPad mini comes at a premium, yes, the screen looks like an oversized, albeit improved, iPhone 3GS. The iPad mini isn’t perfect hardware. Like all of Apple’s first run products, it usually takes a generation or two for them to hit the sweet spot. The fact is, though, that neither of these tablets are anything to write home about when it comes to hardware specs.

The iPad mini is hands-down the better tablet because of its build quality and because of its excellent tablet optimized software library. You can kick and scream all you want about the lack of a Retina Display, or the fact that it comes in at a premium price, but the facts are facts, and the apps don’t lie.

To use this feature, you need to do is click the Options icon in the upper right of Chrome, select “Sign in to Chrome”.

From the dialog box that appears, use your Gmail account to login.

Now, in the Chrome browser on any computer or other device, you need to do is log on to the entire paragraph that used above (just as you described above), the entire set of Chrome will be synchronized.

Besides the sync tab is open, this function synchronously bookmark list, the application is installed, access history, interface …

“With this method, you can experience the Chrome browser the most familiar way,” Mathias said.

Although this feature has been equipped with long Firefox (via synchronization features Firefox Sync), but this is the first time Chrome is equipped with this feature.

Whether or not you like Apple products, it’s hard to dispute the power of the company’s iconic ad campaigns. From the famous “1984″ ad for Macintosh, 1997′s “Think Different,” the 2006 John Hodgman / Justin Long “Get a Mac” series through to today’s iPhone ads, the work of TBWA/Chiat/Day has been consistently simple and clever, positioning Apple products as perfectly crafted moments of zen-like calm that make your life easier.

Apple’s latest series of three commercials, broadcast during the 2012 London Olympics, are nothing like that.

They all star a single actor who portrays an Apple Genius Bar employee, and stupidity appears to be the other unifying theme. It’s the young genius’ job to explain to two seemingly inept Mac users how to use their computers, and to let a would-be Mac buyer know that he’s been deceived. They feel intellectually cheap. We have no idea how these got greenlit, much less how the company decided they were worth paying for a fraction of the $1 billion NBCUniversal made in Olympics-class airtime this year. Perhaps you’ll feel differently, though. You can watch them below and decide for yourself.

Drop test: Nexus 7 faces off against Apple’s iPad and wins [VIDEO]

Apple’s (AAPL) iPad and Google’s (GOOG) Nexus 7 are, without question, the two best tablets on the market. Each device has advantages over the other, such as the iPad’s Retina display and the Nexus 7′s $199 price tag. Build quality is one area where many might think Apple has a clear advantage considering case materials and cost, but according to an independent third-party test, that apparently isn’t the case.

Warranty service provider SquareTrade conducted its traditional drop test with both devices and the results may shock you. The company dropped both devices while standing, from a table and even in a tub of water. While both tablets fared well, Google’s slate clearly outperformed the iPad, especially in the water test.

The Nexus 7 was still fully functional and capable of playing video with sound after the water drop, and while the iPad was functional, its speakers no longer worked. SquareTrade’s video follows below.
